Change of Seasons Is the Perfect Time To Add Variety to Your Child's Menu of Foods… and Activities!
The arrival of each new season not only brings new family outdoor activities, but also great ways to add variety and good nutrition to the family menu. This spring, look for delicious seasonal fruits and vegetables, as well as a host of fun activities, just waiting for you and your family to explore as you spend more and more time outdoors!

Take in the Colors of the Season.
Not only will you find flowers and lawns in full bloom during these warm months, but you'll also find a new array of colorful fruits and vegetables just “ripe” for the taking. Dark red and blue fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, red grapes, pomegranates and cranberries are particularly good fruits to add to your child's diet. Because they contain anthocyanins that have many more times the antioxidant power of Vitamin C. Take advantage of the season and give your child a bowl or snack bag filled with new fruits and vegetable treats that provide as much good nutrition as good taste! For a little variety, you can substitute 100% juice for fruit during some meal or snack occasions.

Go Outside!
Spring is the perfect time to “unplug” your child (and yourself) from the television and computer screen and re-discover the great outdoors. According to Dr. Renna, kids should spend 60 minutes each day exercising, but keep in mind that doesn't have to be all at once. Take a family bike-ride, go on a family walk around the neighborhood, orchestrate a family gardening project, or gather a few friends for an impromptu game of backyard frisbee. Whatever activity you engage in, you'll all benefit from the increased exercise and the time spent with family and friends. Just because your child may already be on a sports team or participate in a structured school sport doesn't mean that he or she is getting all of the exercise her or she needs. Kids need to develop a strong at-home exercise component to their lifestyle, in addition to structured team sports, in order to maintain healthy habits throughout their lifetime.

Rainy Day Exercising —
No Sun, but Just as Fun.

Don't let the occasional rainy days of spring and summer stop you and your family from finding activities that allow you to exercise and keep fit. Turn on the music and dance with your child, or exercise indoors with a hula hoop or jump rope. Or, now might be the perfect time to make good use of your TV by inserting an exercise video or DVD! Dr. Renna's new children's fitness DVD incorporates both aerobic exercise and resistance training in a simple daily at-home exercise program. It's a great way to encourage regular family fitness without the high cost of expensive exercise equipment and to demonstrate to your child how easy it is for everyone to exercise everyday - rain or shine!
