Families Fit Together™ Gear Up for Fall Fitness Fun

With back-to-school, children transition from relaxed summer fun to organized after-school activities and sports. Apple & Eve partner and pediatric nutrition expert, Mary Ellen Renna, M.D. recommends the following tips to prevent injuries for children participating in fall sports activities:

When signing up for fall sports activities, such as soccer, football, cheerleading and lacrosse, it is important to properly prepare. Remember to talk with your child about rules of good sportsmanship and listening to their team coach or activity leader.

Keep in mind there are always a variety of sizes and maturity levels on children's sports teams, which can sometimes contribute to increased risk of injury. Some simple factors to help prevent injuries:

  • Properly fitted athletic gear — shoes, helmets, pads
  • Stable and up-to-date athletic equipment
  • Adult supervision
  • Preparation — knowledge of sport and rules
  • Proper warm-up stretches and cardio
  • Good nutrition and hydration
  • Protein
  • Fruit
  • Water

If your child prefers free play, bike riding or other unstructured physical activity, the above tips still apply. Visit the Apple & Eve website Families Fit Together™ destination resource to find family activities in your local area.
